The Death of Dionysus

A woman opened the casket of doom,

Where only Hope was kept confined.

I opened my eyes aboard the ship, as floods drowned all beneath.

The foresighted Titan stole the flame,

His liver pierced by pain, his emotion by torment pecked.

A babe who strangled serpents, a man who subjugated cities—he was Olympian!

The hero completed trials, once went mad, lost all he cherished.

But who dared pity him? That was nurse's curse—not even self-immolation eased the agony!

Of the shipmates, save the helmsman, which met a noble end?

The north wind smashed the rocks, the lyrist glanced back, twins killed by twins, the captain could not even cling to driftwood!

You traded an apple for a beauty, yet the wooden horse stormed your gates!

Spear through the commander's throat, arrow in the river-pledged heel, while the archer targeted the wife-abandoner.

Though he once led united armies, he fell to his wife and her lover's blade!

Sages tried to reverse the course: the raving prophetess died, the scheme-seer was coiled by serpents.

How noble is prophecy?

Riddles solved, self-knowledge gained—why then the plagues unleashed?

That Corinthian orphan knew not his own mother!

Not even self-blinding could vent the king's torment.

Took throne, laid down mortal law, the traitor was barred from Hades.

Buried brother, upholding divine law, the dungeon's dead became eternal.

How dare mortal transgress eternal decrees?

Did she love her brother, or Justice itself?

Every tragedy proclaims the grandeur of deus ex machina,

Every tragedy exposes the impotence of cosmic order!

God is tragedian,hero too.
